Sending documents to your accountant

Upload what has been asked for, and say so when something does not apply to you.

4 min readUpdated July 24, 2026

When your accountant needs paperwork, they send a request. It appears under Your to-dos as a checklist rather than a long email you have to read twice.

Where to look

Sign in and look at Your to-dos. Anything Requested from you is waiting.

If there's nothing there, you'll see No open requests or There's nothing to upload right now — you're up to date.

Uploading

Open the request and upload each item. You can send a PDF, image, or document, up to 25 MB each.

A photo taken with your phone is fine for most things. Lay the document flat, get all four corners in the frame, and make sure the text is readable when you zoom in. A blurry or cropped photo will be sent back to you, which costs you another trip.

Items you've completed show as Completed ✓.

When something doesn't apply

Not every item on a list applies to every person. Two options:

  • Didn't have this — you never received it.
  • No longer applies — it applied before but doesn't now.

Use them. Saying so is far more useful to your accountant than leaving an item blank, because a blank item looks identical to one you simply haven't got round to. They'll chase it. You'll both waste a week.

There's also Still applies and From last year where your accountant is asking whether something from a previous year is still relevant.

If something gets sent back

Occasionally an upload comes back with a note — a missing page, an unreadable scan, or the wrong year.

The note tells you exactly what's needed. Read it before re-uploading, because it's almost always specific.

When you're finished

Once everything's in, the request shows All documents received and you'll see Submitted — thank you!

Your accountant is notified. You don't need to email them to say you've done it.

Documents shared with you

Your documents holds both what you've sent and anything Shared with you — a completed return, a report, a letter.

Some documents show as Locked · payment required before download. That's your accountant's arrangement, not a technical fault. Pay the related invoice and it unlocks.

Notes

  • You can upload the same item more than once. The most recent stands.
  • Search works across your documents.
  • Uploads are private between you and your firm.
