Search anything

Global search reaches everything at once. It's the fastest way to get anywhere in LedgerOS, and the prefixes are what make it fast rather than merely comprehensive.

Opening it

Search is available from anywhere in the app. Learn the keyboard shortcut on your first day — it's the difference between navigating and hunting.

What it searches

Ten sources:

• Clients
• Contacts — the people, not the entities
• Jobs
• Tasks
• Documents
• Invoices
• Notices
• Tax research
• Saved answers
• Templates

Results come back grouped by source, so a search for a surname shows the client, their contacts, and their documents as separate groups rather than one undifferentiated list.

Prefixes

Typing a prefix scopes the search to one source before you type anything else:

c:hend goes straight to the Henderson client record without wading through their forty documents. i:1038 finds one invoice.

Learning three of these is worth more than learning all ten. For most people that's c:, t:, and d:.

Prefixes are configurable, so if your firm prefers different letters you can change them.

Contacts vs clients

p: searching contacts separately is more useful than it sounds. A client emails you and you don't recognise the name because they're the bookkeeper, not the entity. p: finds the person and tells you which clients they're attached to.

Search respects permissions

You only see what you have access to. An empty result can mean a permission boundary rather than an absent record — worth remembering before concluding something doesn't exist.

Notes and limits

• Search covers records, not the full text inside every document.
• Results are grouped by source, ranked within each group.
• Opening a result with a modifier key opens it without leaving your current page.
• Prefixes can be renamed per firm.
