Set up your firm
Firm details, timezone, fiscal year, and the two terminology settings that touch every screen.
Ten minutes of settings, two of which are worth actual thought.
Where to find it
The straightforward part
Firm name — what appears across the app and on client-facing material.
Legal name — where it differs from your trading name.
Entity type and EIN.
Address line 1, Address line 2, City, State, Postal code.
Phone and Website.
Timezone — set this correctly before anyone schedules anything. Due dates, appointment times, and reminder timing all resolve against it.
Fiscal year start month — usually January, and worth checking if it isn't.
Fields save as you change them. There's no save button.
The two that matter
Name for a multi-task job
What your firm calls a container of tasks. Five options: Job, Project, Matter, Engagement, and Work.
The default is Job. Pick whichever your staff already say out loud, because the goal is that nobody has to translate.
This applies across the app. Engagement letters keep their name regardless — that's a document type, not a container.
Individual client names
First Last (John Henderson) or Last, First (Henderson, John).
This composes the display name for every individual client from their first and last name. It's firm-wide, not per client, so it decides how your whole list sorts and reads.
Firms that work alphabetically by surname want Last, First. Firms that talk about clients by first name want First Last. Either is fine, but decide now, because switching at four hundred clients rewrites every individual name at once.
What's next door
Two other things live under Firm and are worth a look on day one:
- Offices — set these up before inviting your team if you have more than one location, so people land in the right one.
- Branding & portal — how your portal looks and what address it lives at. Do it before inviting clients.
Notes and limits
- Firm details are firm-wide. There's no per-office override of the firm name or address.
- Changing the timezone doesn't retroactively move anything already scheduled.
- The individual name format applies to individual clients only. Entity clients use whatever you typed as the display name.
