Team chat
Talk to colleagues without leaving the app, and link a message to the client or job it is about.
Team chat sits in the corner of every screen. It's for talking to colleagues — clients never see any of it.
Where to find it
The chat dock is available from anywhere in the app. Expand chat opens it full width.
How conversations are grouped
Four groups:
- Firm — channels everyone can join
- Direct — one-to-one
- Clients — a channel tied to a specific client
- Jobs — a channel tied to a specific piece of work
The last two are the point. A conversation about the Henderson return lives on the Henderson return rather than in somebody's direct messages, so the person picking it up next week can find it.
The three triggers
While typing, three characters open a picker:
- @ — mention a teammate. They get notified.
- # — link a task or job. It becomes a link others can click straight through to.
- $ — tag a client. Same idea.
These matter more than they look. A message reading can you look at this is useless in a week. A message reading can you look at #1120S prep — Henderson is still useful in a month, and it's one click from the work.
Video
Start video opens a call from a conversation. It runs inside LedgerOS — no separate app, no meeting link to send, no client downloading anything.
Starting a conversation
New conversation creates a channel or a direct message. Where nothing exists yet you'll see No channels yet or No teammates yet.
Chat vs. the alternatives
- Needs doing → a task, not a chat message. Chat is not a work queue.
- Context worth keeping → a note on the client, or a comment on the task.
- Said to a client → belongs in the inbox, not here.
- Quick question, answer now → chat.
The failure mode is a firm running its work out of chat. Things get agreed and then lost, because chat has no status and nobody owns a message.
Notes and limits
- Chat is internal. Clients have no access to any of it.
- Mentions notify. Ordinary messages in a channel don't, unless you're watching it.
- Deleting a message leaves a placeholder.
- Chat is not a substitute for the activity log — it's conversation, not record.
